On February 7 and 10, 33 lecturers and professors from the Academy of Civil Service under the President of Turkmenistan (Ashgabat) and the Turkmen Agricultural Institute (Dashoguz) learnt about the interactions between water, energy, food and environment security through the Interactive Nexus Simulation game, conducted by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in cooperation with USAID Central Asia’s Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity (WAVE).

In Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, the USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity organized the regional finale of the Syr Darya River Day events, marking the last in a series of River Day events that started in late August. Representatives from all five Central Asian countries attended the event to participate in discussions about challenges and solutions for improving water quality and water use on the Syr Darya River.

More than 20 participants discussed methods for encouraging more intersectoral planning to enable improved water use and climate change resilience in the country.

On September 13, more than 70 local officials, residents and students gathered on the banks of the Isfara River in Tajikistan to celebrate Syr Darya River Day with a river clean-up activity.
In the afternoon, the celebration continued with an exhibition of water-themed drawings and essays from local students.

The reality of today’s developing society doesn’t limit the tasks of the academic community to the development and preservation of basic science but also involves active comprehension, dissemination, and practical application of new knowledge. At the same time, the activity of professors does not only include educating future professionals, and technical and social staff, but also participation in the creation and implementation of innovative projects. Reflecting the current needs of the academic community, we have to formalize the Network of Academic Societies to ensure its operational efficiency and sustainability. This, in turn, will stimulate the functioning of a sustainable platform and the development of the Community of Practice, thereby forming a communication system to support higher and additional professional education.

Principles of Integrated Water Resource Management and the "Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem" Nexus approaches have proven effective in many countries for enhancing comprehensive and sustainable water planning and management. To this end, the USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment activity developed training courses for master students on IWRM and WEFE Nexus. During the meeting of the Network, the possibilities of their implementation in higher educational institutions of Central Asian countries will be discussed.
