In Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, the USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity organized the regional finale of the Syr Darya River Day events, marking the last in a series of River Day events that started in late August. Representatives from all five Central Asian countries attended the event to participate in discussions about challenges and solutions for improving water quality and water use on the Syr Darya River.
Student winners in national water-themed essay and drawing competitions received awards to recognize the important role that youth will play in the future of water management. USAID also finalized the “handover” of a dredger to the Aral Sea Union, a local NGO in Aralsk, Kazakhstan, which will be used to clean more than 30 small lakes and fishing areas used by local residents.
