The cooperation of the CAREC with the International Hydropower Association Sustainability Ltd to raise awareness of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol in Central Asia 28.03.2016

July 27-28, The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in conjunction with The «International Hydropower Association Sustainability Ltd» (IHAS) plans to hold a training course on "Capacity building using the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (Protocol) in the field of hydropower."

IHA developed the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol in partnership with a multi-stakeholder forum comprising industry, finance, civil society and government representatives. The Protocol is a framework for assessing the sustainability of hydropower projects at four stages of development, and promoting the continuous improvement of hydropower sustainability performance. It provides a shared language for improved dialogue on hydropower sustainability.

The training will be held within the project "Strengthening capacities in sustainable water management at regional, national and catchment levels" with the financial support of the third phase of GIZ Programm "Transboundary Water Management in Central Asia" Program (TWRM CA). Moreover, with financial support of the European Union project "Promoting dialogue for conflict prevention related to environment, water nexus issues in Central Asia: Central Asia Water-Nexus Cooperation (CAWECOOP) ».

Policy-makers, regulators, developers and operators of hydropower projects, and civil society across the region were invited to the training. The content of the workshop include: an introduction to the Protocol, case studies of Protocol assessments, the Shardara assessment, and selected sustainability topics.

The outcome of the 2-day capacity building training will be increased awareness across the region of the Protocol and understanding of the sustainability issues it addresses.

More information on the Protocol can be found at the website http://www.hydrosustainability.org, or contact us by mail ssharipov@carececo.org
