Keep in touch: CAREC met with the recipients of the USAID Smart Waters grant 20.02.2017

On February 14, 2017, CAREC hosted the third meeting with master students of the German-Kazakh University (GKU) who study the integrated water resources management (IWRM), being recipients of the USAID-CAREC project Smart Waters grant and the German Government’s grant.

The purpose of the meeting was to define the interests, thematic focuses and research interests of students as a basis for a Master's thesis and provide linkages between theory and practice, based on existing capacity under the Smart Waters project and other CAREC projects, namely:

• promotion of CAREC approaches to IWRM at the local level

• basin planning

• work on a pilot small transboundary rivers

• ecosystem servicesenvironmental and water law

• water and gender

• international water conventions

• water and the role of local communities and NGOs

• water and climate

• cross-border cooperation, and etc.

Additionally, the DKU students participated in the training on innovative tools for analysis and processing of information using satellite systems – a global information system (GIS) and remote sensing, held by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) organized for CAREC staff.

After the training, the participants discussed how they see cooperation between the students and graduates of DKU Master's IWRM in the future.

Such meetings are held quarterly in CAREC as an effective mechanism for cooperation and mentoring under the USAID Smart Waters project.
