Dissemination of kazakhstan's experience in the safe and integrated use of hydropower installations

Dissemination of kazakhstan's experience in the safe and integrated use of hydropower installations 30.04.2018

On 26-27 April  – a training on the safe and integrated use of hydropower installations was held in Aktobe. The event was organized with the support of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) within the framework of the joint project of the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) “Supporting Kazakhstan’s Transition to a Green Economy Model.”

The training aimed to demonstrate the practical application of modern technologies on hydropower installation in Aktobe region for early warning of flood risks, as well as to familiarize the trainees with the ways to use a wide potential of these structures.

On the first day, the participants got acquainted with the theoretical part of the training, which was followed with a study-tour to the pilot site of the project – Aktobe reservoir. The trainees represented specialists from national and regional environmental institutions of Central Asia.
The safety of hydropower installations plays one of the most important roles in the prevention of emergencies. Destruction of a dam can lead to irreversible consequences: human victims, damage to the economy and the environment. The pilot project on the installation of an automated system for collecting, processing and transmitting data to the control centre was developed for the purpose of early warning of the public about possible threats related to the high risk of floods in the Aktobe region. Modern technologies can automatically monitor the state of the dam and assess the risks and threats related to climatic and technogenic matters.
Following the results of the 2-day training, the participants highly appreciated the clarity of methodological and practical materials, as well as their synergy with an interactive format of the study-tour. Representatives of four Central Asian countries showed their interest in replication of the acquired knowledge in their countries in the long run.
