On June 27, representatives of the Environmental Management Program of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) participated in the online workshop “Communities of Practice and Water Management” organized by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) and presented the Central Asian Community of Practice on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Nexus approach.
The workshop was organized to share experience between communities of practice in the field of water resources management around the world. Thus, the participants included representatives of the World Bank Water Communities, the Global “Water-Energy-Food” Nexus Community, the UNCCD Community of Learning and Practice of Drought Management, Hydrological Sciences Working Groups, etc.
During the workshop, participants presented their communities of practice and shared their main achievements and challenges. Practical cases of cooperation between universities in the region, such as student exchange, joint events, joint development and implementation of a course on water diplomacy, etc., were noted as achievements of the Central Asian Community of Practice on IWRM and Nexus approach.
“The Central Asian Community of Practice on IWRM and Nexus approach primarily unites and provides networking for the academic community of the region. This is a platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation, which helps universities stay in touch and keep up to date with innovations and events at the regional level,” said Ludmila Kiktenko, EMP Program Manager, CAREC.
The role of the Network of Academic Societies (NAS) and the Community of Practice platform in the development of the Central Asian Community of Practice on IWRM and Nexus approach should be noted. Thanks to regular NAS meetings and interaction through the platform, the academic community of the region has become more open to cooperation and joint projects.

At the end of the meeting, the participants discussed topics such as the learning potential of communities of practice, the contribution of communities of practice to sustainable water resources management, leadership and rotation in communities of practice, etc. This helped not only to learn more about communities of practice around the world, but also to establish contacts between them for further cooperation and exchange of experience.
Brief reference
The Central Asian Network of Academic Society (NAS) promotes interaction and knowledge exchange between representatives of educational institutions involved in the management of environment, water, land and energy resources in the context of climate change. NAS has been operating since 2013 with the support of development partners such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Swiss Agency for Development (SDC), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the European Union (EU), the World Bank (WB), on the platform of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia.
The Community of Practice platform is a communication and outreach platform for bringing together representatives of educational institutions, research institutions, government agencies, international organizations, youth and other stakeholders. The platform was created in 2022 by USAID WAVE in collaboration with CAREC on the basis of the Eurasian River Basin Portal (riverbp.net).
