Central Asian countries have significant potential for renewable energy (RE) development. In recent years, their governments have set ambitious targets to reduce emissions and increase renewable energy capacity. The energy transition is set to transform societies and become a key motor for job creation and inclusive economic development in the region.
A recent OSCE analysis revealed that a successful energy transition in Central Asia will create at least 100,000 new jobs. The demand for clean energy technicians, engineers and managers in Central Asia is growing exponentially, but only a few universities and vocational training institutions offer renewable energy programs. Additionally, the energy sector suffers from a persistent gender gap. These educational and gender gaps prevent the region from fully capitalizing on the opportunities of renewable energy and the development of the RES sector.
To meet the expected demand for skilled energy workforce, the Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities, with the support of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, announces the establishment of a Regional Task Force on Education for Inclusive Energy Transition in Central Asia (OSCE RTEET). The Task Force will lead the development, piloting and implementation of curricula on RES for universities and colleges.
All information related to the activities of the OSCE RTEET will be posted on the CAREC website, in the section - projects by clicking here.
A needs assessment will soon be launched to establish the human resource needs of the RES sector, identify training gaps and identify educational institutions interested in updating their training program for RES specialists.
The preliminary results will be presented in the RTEET Kick-Off Meeting on 22-23 May 2025 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
