The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) is an independent, non-political, non-profit international organization with a mission to assist the governments of Central Asia and Afghanistan, regional and international partners in solving the problems of environmental protection and sustainable development in the region.
The establishment of CAREC with headquarters in Almaty was approved in 2001 by the governments of five Central Asian countries, the European Union and UNDP in accordance with the decision of the 4th Pan-European Conference held in 1998 in Aarhus (Denmark).
