Almaty, Kazakhstan (23 May 2025) – Participants of the Kick-off meeting of the OSCE Regional Task Force on Education for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition in Central Asia visited the Laboratory of Alternative Energy and Nanotechnology (LAEN) at the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU).

The delegation was introduced to LAEN’s advanced research infrastructure, featuring over 20 state-of-the-art technological systems for developing solutions in solar and wind energy, nanomaterials, and accelerator technologies. Key highlights included innovative projects such as bifacial solar panels, multi-stage wind turbines, and the synthesis of diamond-like carbon films for nanoelectronics.

“The School and the Laboratory demonstrate how education and science can go hand in hand to create practical solutions for sustainable development,” said Prof. Nurzhan Beysenkhanov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Dean of the School of Materials Science and Green Technologies. “We aim to ensure that students and young researchers not only gain knowledge but also contribute to shaping the future of energy through innovation.”

KBTU representatives also presented the university’s broader academic and scientific contributions, emphasizing their role in engineering and energy solutions across the region. The university highlighted its commitment to gender inclusivity, noting a strong presence of female students and researchers in scientific projects – an important step toward empowering women in STEM fields.

“This kind of knowledge exchange helps shape a new generation of experts in the region – those who won’t just adapt to the energy transition, but will lead it,” said Ludmila Kiktenko, Project Manager at the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC). “Institutions like LAEN play a vital role in strengthening the scientific and educational landscape of Central Asia.”

The visit was jointly organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), as part of the OSCE project “Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Energy Sector in Central Asia”.
