Water diplomacy in Central Asia and Afghanistan – way towards water cooperation development

The regional seminar on “International water conflicts: principles and means of dispute resolution” has started today in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The seminar is organized by the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCCA) in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).

This seminar is the fourth and last one in the series of seminars organized by UNRCCA under the support of the U.S. Department of State in cooperation with EU-CAREC project on “Promoting dialogue for conflict prevention related to environment, water nexus issues in Central Asia: Central Asia Water-Nexus Cooperation (CAWECOOP)”.

The seminar is aimed at development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the sphere of transboundary water resources management in Central Asia through the application of legal instruments governing joint and sustainable exploitation of transboundary watercourses.

Participants of the seminar are representing the ministries of foreign affairs, Parliaments, water and environmental bodies of Central Asian states and Afghanistan. The seminar will last one and a half days and the main speakers are international and regional experts in water law and regional cooperation: Dr. Richard Paisley (Canada), Dr. Sergey Vinorgadov (Great Britain) and Ms. Anna Inozemtseva (CAREC).
